FLYING FISH BEER GARDEN

Case Study Overview
Challenge
In its original state, the outdoor area felt flat, cold and uninviting. A marquee tent and a perimeter fence opened directly onto the parking lot, offering little sense of enclosure or atmosphere. Compounding this, a 9-metre run of exposed windows and frames had aged badly, leaving the space looking tired and unfinished.
The challenge was threefold: conceal the dilapidated windows, close off the unappealing view to the parking lot to create a greater sense of intimacy, and brand the area in a way that complemented its industrial setting rather than clashing with it.
Goal
The objective was to convert a dead, exposed exterior into an enclosed, inviting beer garden that felt intentional and complete. As with all Marshmallow projects, the branding could not feel applied or generic. It needed to suit the venue's existing industrial aesthetic, drawing on the materials and character already present at the Woodmill to create a space that belonged.
Solution
Marshmallow Projects approached the transformation through a combination of practical screening, material choices that echoed the venue's industrial identity, and a standout signature feature to bring energy to the space.
Branded screening that solves and styles. To conceal the 9-metre stretch of dilapidated windows, custom branded IBR sheeting panels were fabricated and installed. The choice of IBR sheeting was deliberate, tying directly into the industrial language of the Woodmill while turning a problem area into a branded surface.
Enclosure for intimacy. A Nutec fence was installed to close off the area and screen the view to the parking lot, giving the beer garden a defined boundary and a far greater sense of enclosure and intimacy than the original open layout allowed.
A signature feature that draws people in. The centrepiece is a 2-metre neon sign carrying the Flying Fish "Surprisingly Good" tagline, mounted on the stage wall. Positioned to catch the eye and pull visitors outside to explore the space, it acts as both a branded landmark and an invitation.
Greenery that ties brand to environment. At the rear, a medallion logo was installed on an artificial-green IBR panel wall, integrating with the venue's Astro and brand greenery to reinforce the Flying Fish identity while softening the industrial backdrop.
